Gravesend is a town in north west Kent.
Milton Chantry is the oldest building in Gravesend. Built by the Earl of Pembroke in 1322 it is all that remains of the lepar hospital, Hospital of St. Mary the Virgin. Prayers were said for the souls of the dead in the chantry chapel. During World War II, the chantry basement was converted into a gas contamination chamber. The site is now Chantry Heritage Centre, a local museum under the care of Gravesend Local History Society.
